The final immersion of the Scheldt Tunnel was successfully completed with the immersion and precise positioning of tunnel element 7. The element was carefully placed between elements 6 and 8, with a remaining tolerance of approximately 25 centimetres on either side.
Following this operation, all eight tunnel elements are now in their final positions on the riverbed of the Scheldt. Each element weighs around 60,000 tonnes and measures approximately 120 metres in length, together forming over one kilometre of tunnel. The immersion operations were preceded by extensive preparations, including ballast calculations, hydrodynamic analyses, and testing of control and measurement systems.
IMMONTEC was responsible for coordinating and managing the immersion operations during this phase of the project. Under the leadership of project manager and Immersion commander Auke Lubach, the element was safely and accurately lowered into place, according to plan.
In the new year, the final phase of the immersion process will begin: completing the closure joint between elements 7 and 8. This will permanently seal the elements together, marking the next – and for IMMONTEC, final – step towards the completion of the Scheldt Tunnel.
